Furniture Ideas For Small Bedrooms

Unless you've built your dream home to your own unique specifications, odds are that at some point you will have to deal with the challenges posed by choosing furniture for a small bedroom. The most obvious point is to consider what pieces of bedroom furniture are essential. Does the room have any built in storage, or will you need a freestanding wardrobe or drawers? Do you need a chair to sit on, or will it be used just for piling clothes on? What sized bed can you get by with? Is your bedroom just for sleeping in, or do you work or watch television in there?

Beds are of course the crucial component of any bedroom and your furniture selection depends on who will be sleeping in the bedroom. If children are sharing a room, bunks are a great way to maximise floor space. Visually bunks can be quite dominating and can make a room appear closed in and smaller, so if the second bed will be used less, a trundle bed is a great space saving solution. Cabin beds are currently very popular for children's bedrooms, providing lots of storage and play space. A divan style bed can provide extra storage, and these are available in the full range of sizes. In terms of design, a smaller bedroom works best with streamlined furniture. You may love the shapely beauty of a sleigh bed, but a small bedroom cannot sacrifice the space required by elaborate bed ends.

The next "essential" in terms of bedroom furniture is the bedside table. The key functions of a bedside table are holding a light, a place to store essentials that may be needed within reach during the night, and maybe an alarm clock. These functions can be fulfilled by a well placed shelf, saving valuable floor space. You might find that a cabinet with 2 or 3 drawers give you that extra storage for your smaller items if you can't fit in a larger tallboy or dresser.

The "double duty" concept is invaluable when considering furniture for a small bedroom. Consider a small desk which can double as a work station and dressing table, or an armoire which can also be a TV cabinet.

A small bedroom works best when it is clutter free, so storage furniture is absolutely critical. Wardrobes can be maximised with hanging mesh shelves for shoes. Out of season clothes can be vacuum packed and stored in compact spaces. Look for cupboards and storage units that are tall and slim, rather than broad, in order to free up floor space.
